As someone who was hired as an Independent Contractor and received a 1099 misc. with only Nonemployee Compenstation, write off only business expenses pertaining to that particular job or the career itself?

only direct expense needed to earn the money that is reported on the 1099Misc.

Expenses for earning the money on the 1099-misc, like travel or supplies and equipment, yes. General expenses related to that career, no.
