It depends upon your definition of what a star is. Jupiter is arguably a failed "star." Which would make it the closet star to Earth, there certainly is some flip flopping about Jupiter. Its not a star, its a failed star. Maybe in the future it may be properly assigned a classification other than planet as Pluto has been demoted from planet status because it is too small, so then perhaps Jupiter may be redefined because it is almost too big to be a planet even now by definition.

I know A.C. and P.C. are defined as the closest, just thowing in some mix, cause I already know that you knew the given answer.

The closest star to us besides Sun is the Proxima Centauri, which is a red dwarf star.

I believe that Alpha Centuri has a companion star called Proxima Centuri which rotates closest to the sun, if you call 26 trillion miles close.

The Alpha Centauri star system. It consists of three stars: the binary stars Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B (both about 4.36 Light Years away), and a dimmer red dwarf star named Proxima Centauri (about 4.24 Light Years away).
After these three, there's Barnard's Star at about 5.96 Light Years distant.
