These are the items listed under sound, video, and game controllers in Device Manager:

Crystal PnP Audio System Codec
Crystal PnP Audio System Control Registers
Crystal PnP Audio System MPU-Compatible
Disabled Device

It also says all devices are working properly except for the disabled one, which has no driver installed. When I tried to download a driver, it said the best driver was already installed!
I tried removing and reinstalling everything with Add Hardware but it didn't help.

The upshot is I have no sound on my computer. No device sounds, no speakers, nothing but the modem sound.

Is there a way to fix this or should I just yank it all and try the Creative sound card I have in another computer?

I have a Dell computer and am running Windows 98.

You know this is funny.I had a friend with the exact same problem and she went without sound for a year.I took another set of speakers over to her house and bingo.her problem was her speakers were bad..she ran windows 98 too..by the way when your computer says this device is working properly,it means the drivers..it can't actually see the hardware...good luck

Right-click on the disabled device, and select "Enable". It will work after you reboot, and possibly before. If that doesn't fix your problem, just download the driver for it from here: http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/companies/263.htm?acd=3&rvd=5&thx=9&bng=7&o=3
