They do it to keep support for the rest of their beliefs. The members of a particular party might be in disagreement over certain issues, but they tolerate the differing views so that those who oppose them on certain issues will back them on the issues they find most important.
For instance, certain people might be pro life. However, they agree that the minimum wage should be increased. The abortion issue is MUCH more important to them. Republicans in general are pro life. Democrats in general are for raising the minimum wage. Now the person could of course choose to be pro life AND be for a minimum wage increase. However, this presents a couple of problems. One is psychological. The other one is political. The psychological problem is one akin to cognitive dissonance. Which is keeping opposing thoughts in one's mind at the same time. The person can't help to think that one thought is right, and the other one is wrong. They seek to have their thoughts be consistent. Since they identify with a particular political party, they want their thoughts to be consistent with that party. Either the party affiliation or the opposing thought as to be eliminated. They take whatever thought is most important to them, and that thought will dictate the party they belong to. The opposing thought, in this case the minimum wage, will be brought into line with the party's general stance on the issue.
The second part is political. If you want the issues most important to you supported by other people, you will have to support some of their issues ( which you might oppose) that are not so important to you.
It's almost impossible to find two people that agree on anything. Each party has individuals that agree with the overall platform of the party. They stay in that party as a way to "unionize" their most cherished beliefs, while ignoring those beliefs of the party they don't agree with.
The result of all of this, is that many members of the party they belong to will simply go along with the party line ( just as long as the party still upholds that person's most deeply held convictions) without thinking about it.

When the republican congressman was caught soliciting young male pages he was asked to leave immediately. When the Democrat did the same thing he stayed on and even received a standing ovation by the Democrats. When Nixon did the wrong thing and was caught, he left to keep from putting the country through more trouble. Bill Clinton perjured himself, was impeached and never left. I do not know what you are talking about if you think the two parties are equal on this subject.

Let's remember that there is good and bad in both parties. As for which party has the worst sins, I think that is up to the individual to decide. As far as I can tell both sides could be cleaned up or perhaps both sides should be banned and we can start over without politial parties.

Yes, it's wrong, but that's the game of politics. They both want to win even if they can't be honest about what they can do for our country. I do believe that they want to do all the things they say they stand for, but it's impossible for them to accomplish what they promise.

I aint ashamed to admit that "mistakes were made."
I don't exalt Clinton or Bush; they both did some good things and some stupid things.
I just pray that the next Occupant will be an improvement over both of them.

But your question is wrong in itself. Democrats lie to the public, Republicans don't. Democrats promise fantastic things that they can't possibly do, Republicans promise realistic things that take time to do that Democrat VOTERS don't care about because they are impatient.

that happens way more often to righties because they are more suseptable to acting like Lemmings, as the liberals call it sometimes. Liberal Dems are usually right more often than the righties because they have you in their hearts instead of your WALLET!
