When you consider the fact that whoever sang the song was the one that wrote the majority of it, then, of the Beatles' output, I'd say Lennon & McCartney were about equal.
Everyone thinks it's cool to like Lennon because he was the abrasive, uncompromising one (is it any coincidence that Liam Gallagher idolises him) and dislike Macca because he was capable of producing, quite frankly, dross (Mary Had A Little Lamb, All Together Now, etc).
When you consider the post-Beatles solo efforts of both of them, each have output ranging from the genius to the absolutely awful.
During the golden years of the Beatles, both Lennon and McCartney produced some absolute classics.
PS George also had his moments. Ringo didn't.

If you mean in the realms of songwriting, then I feel that Lennon has the edge on McCartney. But what great team they were together. George and Ringo had their own individual qualities and capabilities, but they were mainly the 'followers.'

Lennon wrote "imagine no possessions" yet he had a thousand times more possessions than a normal person. I will have to go with McCartney.
