Last I heard they ditched the idea yet again. Peter Jackson had requested a audit of two of the LOTR movies because he had not been payed properly per the agreement he had with the studio. The studio got mad and jumped up and down saying he was being greedy and didn't want to pay him what he should have been and didn't want him for The Hobbit anymore. Peter Jackson worked long and hard on those films and sure he made a ton of cash but so did the studio it's crap they went and messed things up by trying to cheat the man.

Last I heard, Peter Jackson was going to work on "The Hobbit" (split into two movies), but he was black listed by New Line. In other words, he was kick off the project. There was also some buzz that Sam Rami (director of Spider Man and the Evil Dead movies) was going to direct "The Hobbit".

Peter Jackson got into a lawsiut with New Line Cinima and isn't directing it, so chances are there may not even be a Hobbit movie.
