You can do it by hand. If there are bald spots, gently rake them so that the top soil is loose, sprinkle some seed over the area and cover with a thin layer of soil. Water lightly until your grass has a firm hold.
You can do quite a large area by hand if you need to, it's just harder to get an even spread than if you use a seeder.
Good luck!

the easiest most controlled way is to punch or drill .100 diameter holes in a tin can and swing your arm back and forth while walking ahead. The most controlled way is to purchase an under arm crank seeder from a large seed supplier or possibly on line I t has a small canvas bag to carry the sees and a rotary veined wheel spins as you crank throwing the seed as you crank and walk. These are the most accurate. The L cheapo Scott's plastic spreaders are worthless. A large seed store may rent a walk behind drop spreader. They rival the under arm spreader for accuracy. It's too bad you folks don't live in Up State NY. I'd gladly loan either of my Cyclone, Scott's metal Drop or underarm spreader for a weekend.

You can throw it by hand, but not evenly. If you do it this way, lightly rake the seed into the ground and water thouroughly. WHen the seed roots, you'll need to overseed occasionally.
The best way to seed is to get a slit seeder that drops the seeds into slits evenly.

you do not have to have a seeder but it really helps get the seed thick enough and spread evenly and are inexpensive to buy. since you own your home this would be a good purchase because eventually you will need it for something else :)

you dont have to have one but it def helps spreading the sead more evenly. Also if the builder didnt airrate the soil before they seeded you should def do that. You can rent an airrator at many hardware stores or you can walk around and poke holes in the ground but I would go with renting one. And fresh grass sead should be watered every day for the first couple weeks
