There could be discussion on the type of grave you want as to the permanence, later access, etc.
Personally I think the medium is most important. In quicksand or a tar pit, the digging would be accomplished by the object to be buried.
In other areas like you'll find in Louisiana the surface and water table are so integral you could dig forever and you'd still have a silty puddle.
And from another aspect, people some time dig a grave in the span of a few sentences.

Depends, if you liked the person you might dig slow because of the guilt on your shoulders, if you don't like them you might dig faster to make sure they're gone for good.
