I have a second generation 4 GB iPod nano. It fell in the bathtub, and I got it out right away. I immediately turned it off and tried to get all of the water out. I now have it hooked up to my computer and it is charging but a few times this has popped up on it -- "FireWire connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided. Press Center to dismiss." The actual buttons are working, but the scroll wheel is going kind of wacky and is scrolling on its own. Is there hope that it will recover??? :(( And if it doesn't, would I have to buy a whole new one because I don't have a warranty, and I heard that if it is water damage they can't refund a new one. please help! :(

Turn it off now. Unplug it, too.

Go - now!!!!

now put it somewhere where it can sit for several days and dry out completely.

You want it off so that a short circuit doesn't fry a component or circuit board or chip. You can often let electrical appliances dry out completely, and work just fine. But wait at least 2 days. 3 or 4 may be better.

WRONG WRONG WRONG ..
you should never have connected it to your computer until it was completely dry and also there is a battery inside that thing .. water is a conductor of electricity and there is a good chance you shorted it out .. take the thing and let it sit fro a while like a few days in a warm dry place . The best thing would be to open the cover and dry it but I'm afraid that is not for those who don't know how..
with the cover on it it might take days even a week to totally dry out .. even the slightest drop of water can do permanent damage .. next time you take a bath maybe leave the ipod in your room .. that is an expensive bath toy ..
If your lucky once it is dry totally it may work . there are places that may take the cover off for you and check it out cheaper than apple would ..

Water damage in electronics is detectable by technicians. You are right that you will not be able to return it. You need to take the back off of the unit and dry it very carefully with a hair dryer on COLD!! setting. Good Luck!
