What is Kafka's great art in creating this short story is really getting down to exactly how Gregor would feel, and therefore, how we would feel given the same circumstances. I mean, we wake up one morning and we are a bug? and not a particularly fun bug either, like a lady bug or something, oh no ... we had to become a cockroach! Yuck! Yes, Kafka has done a great job in creating a character who wonders and questions and ponders, who rejects and denies and then accepts. It's a terrific short story!

Actually, Gregor's first reaction is kind of strange. His new condition is a surprise to him, but that isnt what really saddens and depresses him. What is is really upset about is the rain and overcast weather outside his window, and according to the story, that is what makes him stay home in bed. A very odd reaction indeed. I would have been much more upset about what I was going to do for clothes and especially shoes, if I suddenly found myself a cockroach. Pax - C.
