They are in love and think they can buck the odds...also, there are (legal) advantages to marriage that dating or living together doesn't offer.
Married people pay lower taxes.
Married people have each other's work insurance benefits to consider.
Married people inherit their spouses "estate" when they die.
Considerations for children.
And the list could go on...
Non married couples basically have the benefit of companionship (which married people also have) and an easier out if they decide to part ways.
