The net speed between the two trucks is 80 mph.

Let T represent the time.

T hours * 80 mph = 360 miles.

T = 360 miles / 80 mph = 4.5 hours.

I assume that this is a trick question: one or both of the trucks would be in the water before they got 180 miles apart.

However, if the questioner is allowing slight turns (to stay on the interstate) and distance measured only along the road, you can get the canonical algebra answer: note that the two are separating at (35+45) mph. Pretend that one is at rest, and the other is travelling 80 mph: now, how long does it take? That's your answer.

Yes, as another poster has already suggested, this is a trick question - from San Francisco, you cannot possibly extend a straight line in both directions without hitting the bay or the ocean.

They are traveling at a combined rate of 80mph. That means all you do is take distance over rate and you get 360/80=4.5 hours.
