It is hard to say since you did not include what operating system you using or what computer you have. On a Windows XP system, with a modern CPU and memory, 5 minutes is a little bit on the long side. You can try speed up startup by decreasing the number of startup programs. Startup programs are the programs which load immediately after log into Windows. When you install any new software, the software program will add itself to the startup program list. Usually, this is not necessary. Ask yourself, do you really need Adobe Reader to load at startup? To see what startup programs you have, go to Start Menu > Run > type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) > [Enter] > Startup tab > uncheck any program you don't need to load immediately after login. The programs might have cryptic names but you can look them up at Castlecop's website (http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html). The website will tell you if the program is absolutely needed or not. When you restart Windows, a confirmation dialog box will appear asking if you want to keep the changes. Check the box and click [O.K.]. You can also use Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files which have acculumately on your computer. There are also some more advance ways to speed up startup. If you are interested in them, drop me an e-mail.

I would bet my last Oreo that you have spy-ware issues. Loading the OS into memory should take 30 seconds. Try this - after it boots, hit CRT+ALT+DEL and look at the processes. System idle should be >95% Translated - the CPU is doing 5% of normal activity. If you see a process hog - you need to find out what's going on. I use Spyware Doctor, worth every penny. Is your A/V up to date?
