Yes, they do. (I know from personal experience it works, used to have one!)
The ends of the boomerangs are shaped like wings. When you throw it so that it rotates vertically as it flies, there is more force on the upper edge of the boomerang than the lower edge - because it is moving forward, the spin will add wind speed to the upper edge and subtract from the lower edge. Because there is the greater force on the upper edge, the nose is pushed to the left (that's how it works for somthing spinning, the force is applied 90 degrees away), for a right-handed thrower, so it turns to the left. This type of force keeps the boomerang turning throughout its flight.
Sometimes, though, it would return a little in front or behind, so it depends on the thrower's skill, and how the boomerang is shaped.
