Many attack the UN here and call it worthless, but they do not see that this is because the most powerful countries in the world don't give it worth (especially the 5 Security Council permanent members with undemocratic veto powers). It is powerless because it was STRUCTURED by the winners of WW2 to be controlled by them.
The UN is an ideal that doesn't match up to its reality because the most powerful countries in the world WON'T LET IT.
Greater world peace? The solution is easy. The invasion of a single nation by another nation or group of nations is only legal under the UN Charter if such an invasion has been sanctioned by the vote of the UN Security Council. This obviously didn't happen with the majority of US invasions (including Iraq). The Israel-Palestine conflict? The US has used its veto power 11 times to block resolutions against Israel (and by far the biggest user of veto power). The US even engages in vote-buying, increasing the average aid to non-permanent Council members by 59%. (Google it.)
A worldwide reduction of nuclear proliferation & arms? That's not going to happen if all 5 Security Council members are in the Nuclear Club, and they all coicidentally happen to be the top 5 defense spenders & arms producers in the world.
So the only way the UN will ever be effective is if it is re-organized so that the powerful countries give up some of their power. They must give up some of what they consider their own sovereignty, and obey a democratically organized authority of the UN.
I'm not a UN expert, but any observer of US-UN relations can see that the US rarely ever listens to the UN. In fact, the US doesn't even support it financially, and is behind on its dues. Now if the world's greatest superpower doesn't obey the UN, what good is the UN? It's a lame duck, especially since any significant military action IN ITS PRESENT FORM would require the US. Actually, in fact, the US often influences the UN to promote its own agenda, in which case the UN becomes a puppet-duck.
The only way this can be rectified is if all countries, but especially the most powerful ones, give up a certain amount of their power, and submit to a democratic authority of the UN, on issues related to global affairs. (Much like the 50 US states give up a certain amount of their own power to the US federal government pertaining to national/foreign affairs).
Obviously, this will only happen if the powerful countries set an example, which will only happen if their own citizens support it... which in the case of the US, they do not. (I do.)
Will the US submit to such a world democracy? Of course not. This is because the US doesn't prioritize democracy, but power & profits. And most Americans would rather be #1 above all others, even at the cost of wars every decade, rather than exist as One of Many in peace.
E pluribus unum - Out of Many, One.

Who says we idolize the UN? UN was established to serve the stability of the international system and to serve the interest of great powers. UN is suppose to make things look nicer. And that is the whole story.

Why don't you ask the people who receive UN aid from their different aid agencies? Better yet why don't you go to an area where the UN is working to better the lives of people and see for yourself what the UN is doing. But that would you mean you'd have to become a warm blooded person and not the dead zombie republican you already are.

No.
The Security Council veto for permanent members undermines the entire UN charter and democratic principle.
Without that undemocratic veto of the few the UN could be everything it was dreamed to be.
In fact that veto was a political battleground for the USA and USSR which is what demasculated the UN for its first 50 years.

Yes.
Our tax money pays them to stay in America, to take up space and not support us.
I don't know about anyone else, but I am tiered of putting stake on their plates while we try to come up with enough money to get hamburger.
That also goes for these over paid politicians.

The UN is a corrupt stinking S hole comprised of mainly 4th world hell hole countries looking for handouts from Uncle Sam...the rest is comprised of sniveling jealous Eurotrash countries ie. France who somehow still are deluding themselves that they are a world power.
I say burn the whole damn global village to the ground.

Pretty worthless in my opinion.
They can spend millions upon millions of dollars to tell us that we are causing global warming (which is a lie) instead of putting together a force to end the genocide in Darfur, then they have no useful purpose. And I can't see why my tax dollars go to supporing them.
They should be EVICTED from the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!!!!!
