Marriage is a sacrament because it's a sacred bond.

To put it as short as I can, in the catholic church a marriage is a sacrament because it is a sacred sign. All sacraments make us more Christ-like. Each also help us share in the work of Jesus and the church. Marriage is a sacrament of service.

Marriage is this: Two disciples come before Jesus and the Church and exchange vows. They promise their love and faithfulness to each other. In this celebration Jesus is present, calling and empowering both the man and woman to become a sacramental sign for each other. From that day on, the wife is to be the special means by which her husband is able to experience Jesus' love, saving power, healing, care, and forgiveness. The husband has the same kind of vocation to be the special means for his wife's growth in holiness. They literally become sacraments of Jesus' presence for each other.

So, from the Church's point of view, saying "I do" in the presence of the priest and the Church community is just the beginning of becoming truly sacramentally "married"...a committed relationship in which Jesus is present.

As far as I know, it doesn't have much to do about the wedding in Cana but it has to do with the last supper when Christ gave us His body and blood. We too give ourselves completely to the one we marry.

Yes- that is part of it.

Jesus CHOSE to perform His first miracle at Cana- even though the time was not right. Remember- He told His mother ," My hour has not yet come."

It also has to do witht the relationship between spouses being compared to the relationship between Christ and the Church.

A little.

But it has more to do with Jesus's teaching on Marriage.

"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate." (Matthew 19:5-6)

With love in Christ.

Jesus said in Mark 10, "but at the beginning of creation God made them 'male and female' for this reason a man shall leave his mother and father and be united to his wife and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not seperate."
