People have invented methods of using different fuels to power cars, and in fact in the 1930's C.N.Pogue invented a carburettor that would use water and convert the hydrogen in the water to power a car.
There have been many conspiracies in order to stop these inventions from being used.
However, within 2 years there will be a car using this method made by Ford. Apparently though they have to modify certain things in order that it is not dangerous to pedestrians, as it is silent, and people cannot hear it coming.
See link about the Conspiracies:

Bio Diesel is awesome, and cheap as Chinese knock off chocolate. But it produces a lot of emissions, and that puts a lot of manufacturers against it, and the fact that it isn't mass producable (at least not on a global scale).
Hydrogen, I'm convinced, is completely useless as a fuel, as battery powered cars (EVs) are already much better than fuel cell cars. But maybe 25 years in the future.
Ethanol is the best alternative fuel. It is affordable, clean, and essentially a good way to wean ourselves off foreign oil. It is better than gasoline for performance applications. Though, if more farmers keep growing ethanol crops (corn) the price of food will shoot through the roof, so I hope it doesn't become to big.
Overall, the EV is the best solution. Especially one that has a supplementary gasoline motor. This means that regularly you can drive on electric power (preferably from renewable sources), but for a long trip or detour, you aren't stuck until the car charges.

We'll never get what we need from the government or the carmakers. This is not a problem they really want to solve. In fact, look what has been developed with no help, tax money or subsidies whatsoever:
*
http://phoenixmotorcars.com/models/fleet.html
*
The Phoenix electric pickup truck - using new, advanced Altairnano batteries (based on research from MIT) - can:
-Travel up to 250 miles per charge
-Carry 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph.
-Charges batteries in as little as TEN MINUTES.
-Has batteries that last 250,000 miles (never need replacement.)
*
Electric vehicles, while widely denigrated by the carmakers and oil companies, are a perfect solution to our problem. Electricity to drive around is only a penny or two per mile, much cheaper than gasoline. Amd drivers can also install small solar panels on their garages to drive for ZERO cents per mile. No other fuel choice offers this option.
*
Yes, the Phoenix is a real car, being built right now for fleet use by companies like PG&E. So why, do you suppose, our media, government, and carmakers are being so quiet about this vehicle and the technology behind it?

The problem is the support for that vehicle.
Im in indiana and ive never seen a cng pump, but when i go to california, thats all i see.
You need to have the infrastructure that can meet the demands of the vehicle. This is why electric vehicles are starting to get alot of support. You can just plug it into any wall outlet so it charges.
