Hello. I am very familiar with Surry County. I'd look for Blue Rug Juniper or Blue Pacific Juniper. Blue Rug would be my first choice as it is more aggressive and tolerant of clay (red) soils. Blue Pacific looks a little better color wise and is more delicate in appearance. We sell both for $3.50 in gallon pots. Lowe's has them for a bit more. Any nursery in your area can help. Make sure you water them this summer. Plant them in a zig-zag pattern about 3 feet apart for good coverage. Try to keep the weeds out or use a pre-emergent like Preen or SnapShot. These will not harm the junipers. Fertilize with any slow-release fertilizer. You will not have any insect or disease problems and junipers are cold and heat tolerant.

I'm from McDowell County. Creeping Juniper works well, and spreads fairly fast. It stays low to the ground and holds the soil well
