Bud#21, I certainly do not have a guilty conscience. I love reading and no I'm not a nerd. And yes most people I've met tend to think like that.

don't be nasty for the sake of it. If you can't be nice, don't answer.

What an interesting question...

Haven't you noticed that society needs to label people because by doing so they would feel safe about putting others in the little carboard boxes in their mind and thus making everyone easier to understand? Some people give readers (aka nerds) a hard time because they cannot understand why someone would choose to read a book rather than pull wedgies in gym class. But the truth is, readers, sooner or later, become leaders if only because they have gathered / borrowed / gleaned more learning from other people's experiences through books (whether fiction or non-fiction).

For now, stand firm by your nerdiness / geekiness. People will feel that confidence and comfortability with your self. It's just how you carry yourself, y'know. I'm a nerd and a geek and extremely proud of it.

Since the time that I first learnt to read I have always had a book on the go. I haven't been called a nerd but quite a few people I know like to boast that they never have time to read because they are busy, busy, busy. The implication here, I think, is that I am an idle ****!

There's too much intolerance these days. We are all different and we all have our own interests. People don't seem to recognise this; if you don't go with the herd you just get knocked.

Keep reading and ignore them! They are the losers, not you.

I completely agree with Flower! I think the reason is because we label. Everyone does, even if they don't mean to. Apparently a label for a nerd is liking books, i get told that I'm a nerd all the time because i can read a 300 page book in a day. But i don't care, it doesn't faze me, i just roll my eyes and go back to reading. So Flower and Rosanna, you aren't anymore a nerd than i am, so just shrug it off and maybe the world will start to see that not only nerds like to read. (FAT CHANCE!)

Do audio books count? I am listening to 7 of those right now, plus reading 2 "real" books. If you're a nerd for it, I'm a geek.

I think it's because the "cool" people see reading as staying home when they could be out partying and everyone not invited to their party is "uncool" or a nerd. I can't say I'm not a nerd and I love to read, but that doesn't mean I don't like to do stuff with my friends.

well then if that's the attitude i must be one of the biggest nerds going cos as my name suggests I'm a bookworm and constantly have one book lined up after the next, I'm never without a book and its a running joke when my hubby films me on our hols that I'm always holding a paperback, and to add a cherry to the cake my ideal job would be to read books and write those witty 2 liners on the back that review them. It seems to me people don't have the time for books these days which is a terrible shame.

Then be proud of that fact you are a nerd.

Readers are the leaders of democracy in the world (George Bush is exempt because he is our king).

It is unfortunate that reading has been cast in a negative light...perhaps if we allowed kids to choose what the read instead of cramming one crystalized version of the Literary Canon down their throats it might make everyone a little brighter. Good reading can be found anywhere.

Read what you like, when you like, and don't give a f*** about what anybody else says.

Well I must be the greatest 'nerd' going - because you know what today I have read over 280pages and when finished I will move onto my next book - so if that is being a 'nerd' long may it continue - ignore the pier pressure - leave them behind or basically p.t.o.

Probably cos they can't read themselves and are jealous so they project their insecurities onto you (and other readers).
Sad really, I don't have much respect for those who don't read.

I read once that Brad Pitt says his life is too hectic to read (before he had numerous children) and he finds it boring anyway. I thought he was unattractive before that, but after hearing that I knew I could never respect the man.
But then again I value intelligence above so-called physical attractiveness (which I don't think he has anyway).

Your response should always be "The man who doesn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them", good old Mark Twain.
