You might try volunteering first. Something like a big sister program, afters-school program, visiting with seniors, or visiting with sick children in a hospital. Also working at homeless shelter or HIV/AIDS clinic. Volunteering with Hospic, mediation or other programs that will teach you basic counseling/listening skills can be very helpful too. This will allow you to gain skills but keep a better paying job for the time being. Once you have some skills you should find it easier to either get into school and/or get an entry level job in the field. DA

I think since you have no qualifications, it might be best to do some volunteer work first.
You could, like you suggest do some admin work to get your foot in the door, but I'd also do some volunteer work in some of your spare time on top of that, as it will probably be the only way for you to get some real hands-on experience.
I don't know about Ireland, but where I live there are also big brother/sister programs where you just help out one kid by acting has his/her big sister. You can also volunteer in youth centers, old people homes, hospitals, schools, shelters, etc.
Whatever you decide to do, good luck!

Maybe try volunteer work first in a hospital or work with battered women and children. Doing community services and jobs similar gives you experience and also allows u 2 be explose 2 people in higher places that can see your work and dedication and maybe open the doors 4 u 2 take training courses or hire u on spot and offer on-the-job training. U could work with Boys/Girls club. Try working at Salvation Army. U could work at community center in your area!! Good Luck

Try looking at jobs in residential care for adults with mental health problems. I know a few people who have gone on to social work or counselling through that. Alternatively apply for voluntary work - homeless etc. For the counselling, think of something like the samaritans etc.
Check out social care jobs in the Wednesday Guardian, or look on reed.co.uk.
Good luck!!

I think that a job in an elderly care center (nursing home) or work with battered women. I assume you need to get paid while you pursue this worthy but almost impossible career. The burnout rate is high for those who truly care, often leaving the job to low skilled disinterested persons. God bless you and good luck.

Try going down to the Salvation Army or Gospel Mission. There you will work with street people and see how they
really are. It all depends on what interests you. If you prefer to focus on the disabled, I suggest group homes. If counseling interests you, try working at a shelter for abused women or group homes for troubled kids. Foster care may be a rewarding experience.

Volunteer any at any place that will have you. They need the assistance so very badly, and all causes are worthy. The work you do for free will not only benefit those in need of your generosity, that will come back to you tenfold when you are able to list it as experience in the future. It's a win win situation. Good luck!
