Ive just had an estimate to remove a back boiler in the lounge fireplace and replace it with a new one in the kitchen, cost: £5,200 inc boiler, VAT and parts, is this realistic or am i being conned?

It's a con. If you have a back boiler, replace it with a back boiler. Some plumbers say you can't and want to charge you £5,200. Go on the internet, look for Baxi Bermuder back boilers and ask them for a local company that installs one. You'll pay £2,000 to £3,00 tops for back boiler, fire and tank.

It does seem to be on the high side, although without seeing your property I don't know how much work is involved. It would certainly be worth getting more quotes.

I am currrently installing a full system (6 radiators) with a Baxi 80HE combi boiler for £2899 inc VAT

It's too high, you can get a full central heating system fitted for £2500. Also new boilers now must be the energy efficient condensing boilers, get a certificate to say it conforms to the new building regulations, or you will have problems if you sell the house.

If its a quote from british gas ,its their idea of realistic. Like `Hellequin` without seeing your property its difficult to be objective. Get on the corgi website, and you wil be able to find all the corgi folks in your post code. get some independents round for estimates. prices will vary, dependent on the specification of the materials they are going to use. dont be afraid to question installers about the boiler etc and warranties. Also check their credentials, we all carry ID cards, if they cant or make excuses send them on there way.

Hope this helps

our quotes came in around 3,500 - 4,500. that was choosing not to have a replacement fire with them and selecting a middle price range of boiler.
Always get at least 3 different quotes and ask them all to explain exactally what work will be involved when they quote u.
good luck
ps. stick to a brand name boiler which parts will be readilly avaliable for (worcester, baxi, valiant etc) or u may have trouble finding anyone 2 fix it 12months down the line!

does sound expensive check the yellow pages and look for their page that has a selection of registered plumbers and heating engineers - it is normally sectioned off in a small area of its own - we've used this in the past for plumbers / surveyors / solicitors / dentists etc and always had good results at fair / reasonable prices
its definitely worth getting a few estimates before committing yourself

Trust your instincts.... It's a rip-off. You can buy a car for that amount of money!!

Not completely linked to question but this is a great site for consumer info:

Should be about half of that price.
