5 answers

2x + 5y = 10

2x + 5y - 2x = - 2x + 10

5y - 2x + 10

5y / 5 = - 2x/5 + 10/5

y = - (2.5)x + 2

The slope is - 2/5

Take the equation for a straight line: y=a+bx
rearrange 2x + 5y = 10 to get:
5y=10-2x (now divide both sides by 5.
y=2-(2/5)x
2 is the intercept of the line on the y axis
-2/5 is the slope.

in the the second example 3x=5 so x=(5/3) ...no slope

General equation of a line is
mx + b = y
where m is the slope and b is the y intercept

Rearrange your equation to get it in the general form
2x + 5y = 10
2x - 10 = -5y
(-2/5)x + 2 = y
So, -2/5 is the slope or answer a.

You can do the other one applying the same principles.

change the equation around so that it's in the slope intercept form - y=mx+a then m is the slope.

2x+5y=10
5y = -2x + 10
y = -(2/5) x + 2. Therefore, the slop is -(2/5) (a)

3x-5=0
x = 5/3 there is no 'y', therefore, it's a verticle line which has no slope (undefined) (d)
