Can I jump right in and read Thomas Harris's Silence of the Lamb first? Or do I need to read the Red dragon or Hannibal first?

They explain a lot from the earlier books in Silence of the Lambs, and it's a good book, so you really don't need to read the prequels.

Red Dragon is actually the first book where Hannibal Lector is mentioned so if you have all three books it would be best to start with this one. If not, you can start with Silence of the Lambs because this is the second book where Hannibal is mentioned, but the first real strong storyline for him. Hannibal is the sequel to the Silence of the Lambs, as it takes place about 7 years afterwards, so be sure to read this one last to tie up all the loose ends of the storyline! (Forgot about Hannibal Rising - good call Joy M - liked the back story in the movie but didn't care for the actor. Haven't read this book yet!)

Thomas Harris is one of my favorite authors. His books really get under my skin, which I like!!!!

I would read the books in the order that they were released: Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal. Also, Thomas Harris has released a 4th book, Hannibal Rising.

You can read the books in any order. I don't think they were all written in order. Red Dragon was written before Silence of the Lambs, and is about things that happened before, but Hannibal Rising was written, I believe, after the others, even though it refers to things that came before them. A lot of people only discovered Red Dragon after they had read Silence ofthe Lambs.

I read Red Dragon years before SOTL came out. And I recalled the book upon seeing the movie. As for Hannibal, I couldn''t watch all of it. It made me physically ill, and these days I probably wouldn't read Red Dragon either. I just don't have the stomach for that kind of thing anymore.

Silence of the Lambs for certain, no longer in simple terms because it has gained a a lot more advantageous quantity of awards than Seven did, notwithstanding it replaced into dubbed that Dr. Hannibal Lecter replaced into the #a million villain of AFI's one hundred years. Anthony Hopkins did a in simple terms right interest portraying Hannibal contained in the action picture. (:

Silence of the Lambs can stand alone without any help from the other prequels. Enjoy!
