I have just had an upper and lower motor mount replaced on my 2002 PT Cruiser.

They are normaly made from rubber, and like all rubber items they get hard over time. This isnt helped with the heat coming off the motor etc. So when they get hard they can break easily. Hope this helps

Rubber fused to metal, add all the stress from quick starts and the torque applied to the motor. Heat from the engine, and the age of the rubber.

Normally they last for a long time but they do fail on occasion.

In the old days, emergency braking , or power braking would cause it...New cars, who knows ???
