about today's controversial social issues?

Some would say, "well the inerrant word of God."

But seems to me the "word of God' can be interpreted any which way. In 1840s America, the Southern Baptist Church was created out of support for slavery. Prior to the modern era, many conservative preachers opposed equal rights for women because they said it was "anti-Biblical." The christian conservative Bob Jones University had anti-interracial dating rules up to the year 2000. They, along with many christians of the past, interpreted the Bible into opposing interracial marriage.

So lots of people in the past have used the Bible to support their bigot beliefs. People today are doing the same thing with gays and gay marriage. They are absolutely sure the Bible is against it, just like the Southern Baptist Church was absolutely sure the Bible condoned slavery.

HERE IS MY ANSWER TO MY QUESTION:

I prefer to let people make their own social decisions as long as it doesn't interfere with the freedoms of others. If you believe there is a God, and you believe a certain group of people are acting against God and hurting themselves, just leave them to it. If you believe in hell and hell is real, these people will burn in hell.

Mind your own business or at the very least don't FORCE your morality on others through government action.

Didn't the christian God give people freedom of will?

The Southern Baptist Convention was indeed created over slavery. They split apart from the national church over that issue.

SOUTHERN BAPTIST CHURCH APOLOGY FOR THEIR RACIST PAST

WHEREAS, Our relationship to African-Americans has been hindered from the beginning by the role that slavery played in the formation of the Southern Baptist Convention; and

WHEREAS, Many of our Southern Baptist forbears defended the right to own slaves, and either participated in, supported, or acquiesced in the particularly inhumane nature of American slavery; and

WHEREAS, In later years Southern Baptists failed, in many cases, to support, and in some cases opposed, legitimate initiatives to secure the civil rights of African-Americans; and

WHEREAS, Racism has led to discrimination, oppression, injustice, and violence, both in the Civil War and throughout the history of our nation; and

WHEREAS, Racism has divided the body of Christ and Southern Baptists in particular, and separated us from our African-American brothers and sisters; and

WHEREAS, Many of our congregations have intentionally and/or unintentionally excluded African-Americans from worship, membership, and leadership; and...

Therefore, be it RESOLVED, That we, the messengers to the Sesquicentennial meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention, assembled in Atlanta, Georgia, June 20-22, 1995, unwaveringly denounce racism, in all its forms, as deplorable sin; and

Be it further RESOLVED, That we lament and repudiate historic acts of evil such as slavery from which we continue to reap a bitter harvest, and we recognize that the racism which yet plagues our culture today is inextricably tied to the past; and

IN RESPONSE TO SHRINK,

There is a difference between how liberals and conservatives use the government on social issues. Liberals seek to EXPAND social freedoms. Conservatives seek to use the government to RESTRICT social freedoms based on their conservative interpretation of christianity.

That is the difference. Legalizing gay marriage just like legalizing interracial marraige, does not mean you have to marry a person of the same gender or different race. It simply gives you have the option, not the obligation. That is not forcing morality on others.

SCRIPTURE IN THE BIBLE SUPPORTING SLAVERY. NO SPIN REQUIRED

"Let all who are under the yoke of slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be blasphemed. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful to them on the ground that they are members of the church; rather they must serve them all the more, since those who benefit by their service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these duties.
Whoever teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that is in accordance with godliness, is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid craving for controversy and for disputes about words. From these come envy, dissension, slander, base suspicions, and wrangling among those who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth." (1 Tim. 6:1-5)

"Tell slaves to be submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect; they are not to talk back, not to pilfer, but to show complete and perfect fidelity, so that in everything they may be an ornament to the doctrine of God our Savior." (Titus 2:9-10)

"Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as you obey Christ; not only while being watched, and in order to please them, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. Render service with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not to men and women, knowing that whatever good we do, we will receive the same again from the Lord, whether we are slaves or free." (Ephesians 6: 5-8)

I'M NOT EVEN GOING TO INCLUDE OLD TESTAMENT PRO-SLAVERY SCRIPTURE. IT WOULD TAKE ME TOO MUCH TIME TO FINISH.

You seem more like a preacher than a question asker. Since you are more interested in answering, what's a trovalta? Are you referring to John Travolta? If so, what about him stinks?

To answer your question, I have found that the notion of right and wrong comes from what people BELIEVE to be right and wrong based on the words of others dictating to them what's right and what's wrong over and over until it is instilled into their subconscious mind. (raising children, for example) Right and wrong, in most people's minds, is nothing more than beliefs. There is often no science behind it at all. It really is up to the individual to determine if those beliefs are in society's best interests. This is where wisdom might help overcome their shortcomings. Unfortunately, wisdom is like common sense... it is in far too short of a supply.

My beliefs align with Thomas Jefferson's... you can never know too much about something. The more information you take in, the better your chances are for making the right decision(s). Too bad more folks don't abide by this notion, instead of just taking a trusted authority's word for it.

You are right on some points and very wrong on others.
Throughout the Bible, "slavery" is acceptable BUT it is not and never was the dehumanizing form that comes to mind when you hear the word slavery. It is more like a master/servant relationship. Look through the Bible and you will see that this is always the case. It also specifies that servants are to be treated well, like employees.
2nd point, women and equal rights.
There is a certain vagueness in the Bible regarding this which is what led to misinterpretation. The specified differences between men and women in the Bible are specifically to fill a particular role. The Bible talks about these things in view of a married couple. It is Gods intent that we (husband and wife) play a particular role within marriage for His glory.
The wife plays the role of the church (people of) and the husband plays the role of Jesus.
Jesus loved the church above His own life, husband, you do the same to your wife. Wife, you repect and follow your husband. This causes people outside the marriage to see what God intends our lives to be and shows His nature toward us. Male and female are NOT unequal, they ONLY play a different role.
3rd point, interracial dating.
THAT was a horrible misinterpretation by Mr. Jones.
There is not even a hint that this is so.

Interpretation of things that are not specific and clear is NOT the Bibles problem or Gods. It's OURS.
How does someone misinterpret, "no homosexual will inherit the kingdom of God". Or, "If a man lyes with a man as he does with a woman, it is detestable."

Some things are just so specific they need no interpretation.

I believe there is arrogance in both sides of the table. I believe that morality is created by thousands of years of trial and error and was evaluated by thousands , maybe millions of people, many of them smarter than you and me. I do not want to argue too much on belief system that are so well established. I get fustrated that people use their"Common sense" to justify large scale changes. a single person can easily make a mistake because they have not seen the problem from all sides and understand the problem completely. Also all men are bias and if a single person is able to change morality in such a way their bias would color their view. As for the gay marriage. I believe most culture frown on homosexuality in the pass, because they see that gay men get more diseases. They still do. These people believe god is punishing people for their sins. As for interracial marriage. That is only a recent think relative to everything else. Prussians has asiatic eyes because of the Mongol blood in them. Mexicans are a mixture of Native AMericans and Spanish. Indians is a mixture of all three races. THere is no test of time for that belief.

Social legislation shouldn't be permitted because it is government involvement? Well, marriage is a government action. Regulated by the states. It is pro-gay marriage individuals who want the government to pass legislation allowing the government to regulate their relationships.

I take issue with some of your claims, btw. The Southern Baptist movement was not begun for advancing slavery. That is just flat-out hogwash. And although I have never agreed with that position by Bob Jones U, your reasons are incorrect on that, as well. It was the preference of the university, and they did not claim Biblical support for that position. It was a decision made to stay out of trouble with the parents of students (who might be prejudice, black or white, btw).

There are always differences of opinions regarding peripheral issues, not clearly dictated in the Bible. Obviously, slavery was the norm in Bible days, so it is error for either side to claim Biblical support.

But issues involving morality, such as fornication, adultery, murder, lying, etc., are really clear and being in favor of these are not supportable Biblically.

Aside from that, we do not live in caves, unto ourselves. The actions of people affect society.

It's sad but true.
And there's more...
In his rhetoric Hitler also fed on the old accusation of Jewish Deicide. Because of this it has been speculated that Christian anti-Semitism influenced Hitler's ideas, especially such works as Martin Luther's essay On the Jews and Their Lies and the writings of Paul de Lagarde.[22] For instance, Hitler biographer John Toland opines that Hitler "carried within him its teaching that the Jew was the killer of god. The extermination, therefore, could be done without a twinge of conscience since he was merely acting as the avenging hand of god..." However in Mein Kampf Hitler writes of an upbringing in which no particular anti-Semitic prejudice prevailed. In Linz Hitler wrote of no apparent anti-Semitism either in his family unit nor being expressed by the Catholic Church of his childhood

Yes, He did and I agree with you. I am anti-homosexuality, but I don't hate gay people. On the contrary, a very good friend of mine was gay. Perhaps my best friend. He had his sins, I had and have mine. As for the Bible, its teachings have been corrupted by organized religion. But, it's an important book and I would never toss it aside because of bad religion. That would be like throwing out the baby with the bath water, pardon the cliche.
