Situation; man is attacked by group of amed thugs when he fled for his life he hit one with the car by accident he didn't stop and was charged with hit@run now I recently was told there is no selfdefence in NJ but there is some law called distress for life or something of that nature if anyone knows anything includeing the actual name about this your answer would be greatly appreciated thank you very much

Yes, there is "self defense" as an excuse in NJ, however the situation you put forward does NOT fit. You were under a duty, the moment you got in your car to flee, to exercise reasonable care. Speak with an attorney NOW. You can get the murder charges reduced to negligent manslaughter or POSSIBLY aggravated assault (assault with a deadly weapon). However, you need to get an attorney NOW. No, you can't use self defense under the facts you gave.
