i'm building a wall to close an old opening to my garage. i am using breeze blocks, and want to fix them to each side of the opening to secure the new wall. I can't tie them in by interlocking the blocks, as the walls are already built, or use the wire things which are placed in the cement. I've heard about metal strips which you fix to the existing walls, and slot the new blocks into, to give the new build more strength ... but what are they called ???

You need a wall starter. They can be the strip you descibed with metal bits that can be hooked in or bent down into a mortar bed.

The easiest ones are the hook type where you drill into the old wall and fit a rawl plug and screw the wall tie in. Click on http://www.build-center.co.uk/build/index.html and type H18321 into the product box.

Hi!
The best and cheapest way to tie into the existing walls is to drill and plug every other block course and screw in metal frame ties. They come in different sizes. Just lay a course drill an appropriate size hole, insert a plastic plug and screw in a metal frame tie.
Just a note. 'Breeze' blocks are not used anymore. Concrete or Insulation blocks.

The most popular fixing is called furfix.

There's many variants, but this allows easy bonding from each course to existing.

Excuse the spelling I'm drunk, but thats the badger.

ADD. Details... fuc!< me I'm drunk an I still have more of a clue lol, brick ties have NO relevance to bonding with existing formations!!!! they only work for cavity walls ect. Seriously bruv furfix is the name ya need. IM or email if ya want, but thats the crack!!!!!!

No, I used the grass blades, too. Never learned to whistle very loudly between my teeth, but would love to do that. Did learn to use my two little fingers, but that only works sometimes. Feel really stupid when I am all set to let blast and nothing happens. And I'm a little more reluctant to do that nowdays as I often have my hands in some pretty grimey stuff.

They are called brick ties, my friend. Just get some cut nails and hammer em' in every joint. Either that or "tooth out" your existing opening.
