I agree with others on here who've said that euthanizing should only be done if there's no other solution. As far as the best method, an anesthesia overdose is the best way, because it puts the fish to sleep first. Anesthesia should be given before freezing as well. The anesthetic available to most hobbyists is clove oil. Here's the correct method for use: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-most-humane-way-to-euthanize-a-fish.htm

I don't think there's any "humane" way to kill a fish. Putting it in a lake, it will die because it doesn't know how to feed itself, and the water is a different temp, which can kill it. Putting it in the ocean, it will die a slow and painful death because the chemicals in the water are different from what the fish needs (Salinity etc.) Putting it in the freezer it just as mean, I can't believe people can do such awful things.... how who they like someone to put them in a bag of water and stick them in the freezer... that's just wrong, bad answer sorry. I doubt Humane Societies are too concerned about fish, unless they are the real prized, rare fish. Try and give the fish away to someone, put it in the paper as "Free to good home" or something. That's alot for a fish, but if you don't want it, don't kill it, give it to someone who would appreciate having it.

Some fish stores will buy your fish. You just have to call around. You can get a dollar an inch for most cichlids, pirhanas, and larger fish. Even if they don't pay you for them they will usually take them off of your hands. Don't call the humane society its not cool. My mom did that with one of my fish and they thought she was crazy. They did come and get the fish but they really had a bad attitude about the whole thing.

First off why do you want to kill them other then you got tired of them give them away if you can.
Don't put them in the local pond or lake did you ever hear of evasive species that somehow got into an ecosystem and kill off the other species of fish and pretty much ruin the lake or pond thats upsetting the balance of nature so to speak

If your fish is sick why not try asking for what disease it may have. And which medicines can be used to cure it.
If you are just trying to get rid of them call a local pet store and see if they will take your fish. They are usually more than willing to take fish from people. Some also give you cash or store credit. Fish shouldn't be killed just because you are sick of taking care of them.

Why don't you check with a local elementary school? I know some classes have pet fish, hamsters, etc. If not, put ad in the paper "Free to a good home" just don't kill them. How mean!!!

there is no humane way to kill your fish! unless they're severely sick.
the best thing is to donate or give them away.
like most of what they said you can also advertise.

Why don't you call the Humane Society and see if they'll take them instead of killing them. Craigslist?

I don't think there is way to humanely kill a pet if there isn't an illness involved. You didn't list an illness, you just want to know how to get rid of your fishy and that's just wrong man, wrong!

You could put them in a bag of their water and put the in them freezer but don't ever put them into the tolet. They die suffering from the chemicals in the sanitary plant. Or just do as the first answerer said and take them to the H. Society. Or give them to your local pet shop. You can also euthanize by putting alchohol in their water. A mixture of clove oil and vodka can work well too.
