Ever hear the phrase "Swab the Deck." Sailors greeted the dawn with the command to "swab the decks," to mop them down and sand them for the days activity - - - bell bottom trousers were essential for easy roll up - - - also that phrase from the 50's, "high water jeans," same deal, rolled up trousers - - - you'll find examples of this when you read nautical fiction by authors such as Alexander Kent (Douglass Reeman) & Dudley Pope & Patrick O'Brien.
