i have an ibook from apple i recently cracked the hard plastic at the bottom (just below the keybord area). the computer still works but it's starting to look worn. is it possible to remove the outer shell? the one that was manufactured on the computer and replace it with a new one?

I believe you can. There are specific serial numbers available on each part of the laptop. To have it replaced, you either have to do alot of researches online or just simply bring the laptop to the Apple store to have it looked at.

the plastic shell like the tower for a computer, just keeps the bits together, and stops electrocution when you try to use it,

the shell can look like anything you want, as long as it protects the workings , is usable and gives the right ventilation

there is no reason that the shell can't be repaired or replaced,. Apple may be able to do it for you, if it is still under guarantee. there are unofficial apple repairers.

you could use this opportunity to get a custom job, turn your ibook into an old looking book, or an animal. or something unique and personal The limit is your imagination. I hope this thought inspires you.

If it were a regular PC laptop I would say probably. Unfortunately you have a mac. You're best bet would be to take it to a local apple dealership/repair centre. I'm not even convinced that they would be able to do it themselves and that it would have to go back to apple. I suspect it would cost a small fortune to do this though.

(BTW no disrespect is intended towards apple repair people, I'm just aware how hard can be to get parts for apple systems, even for the dealers).
