Usually, you get a higher ranking by first, being search engine optimized (so that the bots can crawl to your website), then have a high link popularity.

Link popularity is when you have a link from another site to yours. When a high link popularity website links to yours, your link popularity also increases.

Spiders (or bots) created by these search engines crawl around the web, indexing websites. When you search, the highest ranked websites show up first.
