Ok so I am A 19 year old freshman, studying at school of visual arts in New York city. As of today my family decided it was time for me to get out into the world fully and make it on my own. The only problem is I live in New York city where everything is more expensive than it needs to be and I have no money. About a month ago my family agreed to help me fund an apartment that I will be living in this summer with a roommate. However, since my family took back their offer to help me pay for this apartment, I am in need of a legal and fast solution to come up with close to 3000 dollars by the end of the month in order to pay for my half of the apartment. I cannot back out of this agreement because I signed an agreement. My family did not, so they are not held by any legal obligations. As of today my family cannot help me in any way but by giving advice. What do I do?

Please I need solutions to make this work, the person I entered into the contract with a close friend of mine, and I really do not want to let him down. Any sort of solutions will be greatly appreciated.

You are going to have to buck up and ask your family for a loan. If they won't give it to you, you'll have to obtain a loan from a bank or credit card company. If you have time, I would recommend getting a job as a waiter - they can potentially make a few hundred dollars a night.

I supposed technically, you could sue them for breach of contract, but since nothing was in writing, it's awfully hard to prove an oral contract in court. The only recourse I see at this point is to tell your roommate that you can't come up with the money, and explain to him how your parents backed out of their end of the deal. I can't imagine how you could come up with $3,000 within a month's time when you're a college student (nothing legal, anyway). Maybe you could help your roommate find someone else who is more financially solid who can take over the agreement for you.

Sorry you ended up in such a mess.

If you can get a job, now is the time to do it. Even if you can't make 3000 by the end of the month, you will have something to pay towards the rent. Why not check the career placement office at SVA, or see if they are hiring themselves - if you can get a full time job at the school, they will even waive tuition for several of your classes next semester, so you won't have to drop out.

Damn, that is COLD for your family to do. They said yes and gave you their committment and blessing, you went ahead and signed papers, and then they backed out? Yikes.
3k in a month is tough. Take out a small loan, pay it, and vacate the apartment citing hardship.

If everyone will look a little farther down the page you will see the same question only he left out the part about just going bankrupt.

Do not fell sorry for someone who is not responsible for their own actions.
