Medically I can't tell you anything except that it is scary, there is good and bad in any hormone replacement therapy. The thing is, there is a reason we quit producing it, so it seems wrong for me to take it when our body has removed it from our system. There are other supplements that do not contain hormones that help with just about all the symptoms of menopause. I would urge her try those first as they do not cause cancer. Many female cancers are hormone receptive which means female hormones feed them....my sisters brain tumor and both forms of breast cancer she has had are hormone receptive. I think you have a good reason to worry about her taking them. Exercise helps, destressing, yoga, having a better diet, all sorts of things. Personally I sware by Young Living Essential oils so if you can find a massage therapist or holistic practitioner to buy them from it is a much safer, God created, naturally occuring alternative to hormone therapy.

I had to have a hysterectomy at a very young age so going through menopause at the height of my career was not good!! I did for several years use the estrogen patch even though my mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
They certainly helped and using a patch means the drug doesn't go through your liver (another bonus) but right into your bloodstream.
Once I was told by my Mom's oncologyst that her breast cancer was the type actually caused by high levels of estrogen I immediately stopped taking it.
I did take pills originally before the patch but can tell you I didn't find them addictive at all.
If your mom wants to take them, then the decision is hers to make. She should just maintain a good routine of self breast examination and a mammogram once a year as well as a physical.
If she's 8-10 years past the stage I don't know why she wants to take them again unless she's having unbearable hot flashes. Could your Mom just be suffering from a little depression and maybe that's making her lose her temper sooner than she normally would?
Regardless, it all comes down to her talking to her doctor. If the doctor thinks it's okay he/she will give her a prescription. If she/he doesn't think it necessary, they won't.
Don't worry....your Mom will do what she feels is best overall.

Estrogen is not addictive. Post-menopausal estrogen replacement therapy is a good thing. If you are concerned about the long term side effects, try researching menopause and estrogen at the mayo clinic website. I believe you will find that many of the things you "heard" are not entirely true. Doing a little research will help you feel better about it.

No more than 14-per-day Or SHE WILL GROW A BEARD!
Just kidding! Look, perhaps you should do some Real Investigation in the INTERNET as there are Both Good and Bad reports of ESTROGEN THERAPY for Women!
The DOCTOR that prescribes it for her will give her all the facts, and PERHAPS you should go with HER so that the Doctor = = CAN TELL YOU ALSO?
Remember all the INFORMATION that is available IS FOR = = HER = = TO MAKE THE DECISION!
That is Unless SHE IS A CHILD = = AND = = YOU ARE THE PARENT?
Thanks, RR

An alternative, if she hasn't tried it already, is progesterone cream. You buy it in the pharmacy, it's not prescription. It's like a lotion you rub on your skin according to directions. When I first started using it, I started menstruating again! But I'm past that now. It takes care of common symptoms and also helps with bone loss. I would try it before using estrogen. My doctor wanted to prescribe estrogen, but I found the progesterone cream did the job.

it's true it can cause breast cancer, but the risk is usually low for those who are not susceptible to it. talk to your doctor. he/she may be able to prescribe lower doses of estrogen if it is necessary.

If she is not having any problems (night sweats, hot flashes) she shouldn't take anything. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
