If somone is tailgating you what do you do?

Sometimes I tap my brakes. Sometimes I put on my emergency flashers. Sometimes I just let them pass or get the heck out of there way.

If I am in my own car (without tinted windows), I have a reflective sign that says "Back Off" which I hold up. Otherwise I slow down enough to have extra stopping space in front of me so that if I have to stop, I can brake more slowly to keep the tailgater from hitting me. Since the guy is probably an idiot, certainly a bad and rude driver, I pull over when I can and watch him run right up on the bumper of the person in front of me who was going the same speed. This is all for tailgating in traffic, not stalking on an empty road.

If someone is tailgating you, you should increase your following distance of the car in front of you. That way, if the car behind you hits you, you will not crash into the car in front of you..You may think that if you get pushed into the car in front of you it is not your fault however, it would be since you would have also been following too close. So always make sure you have enough room in front of you so you can stop without hitting the car in front. I know that when you are getting tailgated you usually think to slam on your brakes to make them back off but that is never a good idea. You never know what kind of crazy person may be behind the wheel...

I was a cop for 18 years, and saw every stupid driving stunt ever invented. If I had my way, cars would be equipped with rear flamethrowers to keep those morons at a safe distance!! More collisions are caused by "following too closely" than any other driving error.

p.s. The "move the mirror" answer is good. I use this to lower my blood pressure and act like an adult....

Turn on your windshield washing fluid and accelerate quickly. Let your wipers go and hold down the fluid. If they are tailing you, all the water from your windshield will end up all over their car. They usually get the hint. Plus, it is really funny when the tailgater has a really clean car.
I wouldn't brake check because there is always the chance of them hitting you.

Depends. If im on the highway, Im on cruise control. I set it for 5 miles over (the legal limit) and cruise, I dont move for anyone unless its obvious someone is dying or in labor. I go my speed. They can be stupid and angry and tailgate me or they can go around me. If Im going particularly slow, maybe Im way ahead of time or whatever, I do get out of the way, what I expect other ridiculously slow drivers to do, but they never do.

First, I usually slow down.

If it's in the morning before sunrise or in the evening before sunset, I'll turn on my marker lights. That usually gets the jerk to back off reeeally fast.

I also flip the rearview mirror so I can't see the idiot. I used to remove the mirror but I don't have that vehicle anymore.

Slam on the brakes. If they don't hit my car, I continue to slam on the brakes until they do hit me. Then I get out of my car with my wood bat and beat them to a bloody pulp. When I know they are dead, I step on their guts and smash them more. Then I kick the tires on their car as I pass by to enter my car and drive away.

O.K. NOW what do I do AFTER my imagination is under control ? I slow down to about 1 m.p.h. and I won't move over.
