got to www.bootdisk.com and download Win98SE boot diskette. This will make you a bootable floppy that you can use to format the C drive. Go into the Bios and make sure the A (floppy ) is the 1st boot device if so your fine. Then put the diskette in and let it load all drivers needed on the boot, it should come up with the a:/ then type in format c: and it will ask if your sure you want to. You can do this is you have no Windows XP CD to boot from to get to the A:... You can not format the main boot drive from within Windows environment (WIndows up and running)...THanks

Formatting doesn't reset your computer. It wipes it out. You can't format the drive you're running off of. You'd have to boot off the install cd or a rescue disk to wipe out the hard drive.

Try

When you boot the computer up hit F8 to get you into the boot menu and boot into console mode, which is DOS and format from there.

If you are booted to the c dive this won't work. You need a bootable floppy.
