batteries in a basket w/ holes in it -- crust from acid on bottom of basket -- possible fell through holes?

i am wondering if i need to clean the shelf in the closet the batteries were on.
also, how would i do that?

You should wipe it down with paper towels, soap & water.

Batteries are likely to drop acid. Not very dangerous but you might like to scrub with a baking soda solution to neutralise it before normal cleaning with soap and water.

Use a little baking soda on a wet cloth,it will change any acid to a salt which will not hurt u.
