you're right. I look forward to sleep and the only part I realize I'm enjoying is when I'm laying in bed relaxing and drifting off to sleep, and then waking up feeling rejuvenated. Also if I go to bed upset when I wake up my bad mood is gone.

Tee hee. It's like youth being wasted on the young. You can't appreciate it while you're in it. Only when it's over.
Although you can enjoy sleep while you're in it if you have a lucid dream. It's like being awake while you're asleep. You're conscious of the fact that you're dreaming. Those are really cool! I haven't had one in a while. It's amazing! That's where you realize you're in a dream so you're capable of anything (such as flying, eating brownies, having superpowers or having a sleepover with Brad Pitt in Troy & Russell Crowe in Gladiator...not that I would do that! Tee hee!) It's so intense. It's like it's really happening but you are in control so you can make things happen. Like a virtual reality experience...if you want to ride a unicorn through Central Park or fly to the top of the Eiffel Tower you can...but enough about lucid dreaming (sorry I went off on a tangent there!)
You can still appreciate sleep when you're awake. After you wake up from a good night's rest you feel refreshed & ready to face the day. How often does that actually happen in our busy lives though? Usually we don't get enough sleep & are awakened to the horrible sound of the alarm clock....

When you look forward to sleep, you're not thinking of it as something entertaining. Sleep provides an escape from troubles and worries.
When you're tired, your body and mind lag. You feel heavier...everything seems to require more effort.
These feelings are generally considered unpleasant.
So the desire for sleep is simply a longing to ease your discomfort. You look forward to lying back on your bed because you know that when you do, any unpleasant things that accompany consciousness will slip away.

I've thought about that before too. It doesn't matter how good you feel the next day, you generally feel that you've missed out on it as soon as you wake up. It's a great question!!! Sometimes you DO experience what you miss out on though. Have you ever had that experience when you're so tired that you drop in and out of sleep on the settee about 20 times during the day. You feel yourself drifting?? That is a wonderful experience - if you're in the mood for it.
It's a bit like when you're unwell and you're lying on the settee watching rubbish on the television. But you don't care that it's rubbish. In fact the 'rubbish' seems to be more interesting because your brain or lazy unwell mood can't be bothered to subconsciously comment on the particular programme. You end up (kind of) enjoying it because you're feeling so not yourself. That's a bit like sleep - in a way!
It's also a bit like when you're sitting on the toilet and you can't poo. You want to but you can't! But you're in no hurry so you kind of sit there and enjoy it. NOT in a weird way! Just in a way that you can't explain.
I hope I have not made a right d*ck of myself answering this question but I'm only telling you my experiences! lol!

If I am awake instead of sleeping, then I am awake to know I'm not enjoying it, when I should be sleeping. But right now, I feel pretty well. Thank you for asking. And how are you feeling?

See every night I become aware of how much I love sleep and how peaceful and restful it is. How do you ask? Because every night without fail my cat Apollo manages to wake me up by scratching at the door to go upstairs. It is only until I am rudely awakened and pissed off at him do I realize how much I was enjoying my slumber. He is such a pain in the behind!

I think our sleep time is as rich and full as our waking hours and maybe even richer on another level.
It is our time to rest and rejuvenate the body while we expand our consciousness to other levels and dimensional realities.
Conscious dreaming is another way to experience and remember more from your night journeys.

Its the refreshing feeling when we wake that makes us want to sleep. I think if we could get that feeling by not sleeping- we wouldn't sleep.
That and the dreams. I love dreams.
