A rave is a big, late-night party, often (though not necessarily) held at a nightclub. They're essentially dances, with the main genre of music being played being techno and/or trance.

Blacklight or neon lights are often lit overhead (hence the colours that many ravers choose to wear).

Raves are usually not illegal (you should check to see if your state/city has a stance on them), though it cannot be denied that drug use can be common at them (ecstasy, for instance). With that said, if you wish to go to one, go with several friends you can trust, and stay with them. If it's a good venue, then it shouldn't be much of a problem, but be careful, anyways.

If you're planning on going, some things you'll want to remember are water (as they can be quite long, and you can get dehydrated quite easily), ear plugs (dampners, really: the music played at them isn't TOO loud, but it depends on your idea of loud), ID (many nighclubs will check to see if you're the proper age [usually 16/18 or above]) and a cell phone.

Other information about raves? You should really ask your friends to 'show you the ropes', so to speak, if you have any who are already into the raving scene.

A rave is a last minute party with live music and lots of drugs and are very fun if you know what you are doing and nobody slips you something. BE careful and have fun. If your a female take a body guard with just for safety because raves can get pretty wild adn fun.

commonly, it's a large party with a bunch of smashed teenagers shaking their bodies to techno complimented with bright, neon lights in a very dark area (somnetimes a storage house). If you're thinking of going to one, please don't. There will be ecstacy.
