The recent pet food scare caused me to wonder what might happen if scores of canned foods from China were tainted with weird DNA, toxins or other microbes.

Do rational people allow the majority of food they import, to be supplied by a former Communist enemy?

Are the leaders who encourage such economic insanity really friendly to its constituents?

Depends !!! Depends on if any persons were in China. I believe that with all the hype out there now with "Mad Cow" disease, and "SARS",, and as long as we have masks, and other protectants,,,,, that an outbreak of mass destruction, are very slim..... It could happen, but it would be a very slim chance.
All those other things have made us all take a lot of extra precautions. Personally . the thing that makes me nervous, isn't China, and their food products,,,but rather the lack of people who refuse to wash their hands..... right here in our own country. I carry an "Anti-bacterial liquid soap" in all 3 of our vehicles, and when I get home from any stores I immediately go wash my hands. I clean my computer keyboard once a week thouroughly with a Q-tip, dipped in Alcohol.... all my door knobs get cleaned with Pine-Sol, or Lysol Disinfectant, as well as other frequently used handles or knobs....including my vehicles. I would be more concerned about that ...than I would be about China and their food products. We seem to have gotten away from safety and sanitation right here in our own country........ and that my friend should be of grave concern to us all !!!!!

I don't think that tainted food is an epidemic of poisoning.

It falls in the same category as the poor sanitation that gave us tainted spinach in the supermarkets and e-coli in the fast food places. It is not a plot - it is just sloppiness and lack of careful government oversight. These poisonings were from US-source products so you don't need to worry that foreigners and "former Communist enemies" are out to get us.

Yes, there would be mass panic. But not much real damage can occur. But why will China do that? It will permanently hurt China's national economic interest. Also, there are sufficient sampling control tests for quality to minimise the chances of poisoned food reaching the consumers. But terrorists can do this even for a handful of killings to cause panic.

We can always eat dandelions..there are plenty of those in this country...

They are dependent upon us for their economy...why would they start with pets if they were going to do it on purpose??

But you have posed a scary thought...scarier yet is that the pet food companies allow the pet food to go thru untested for contaminants...you always think that paying more gets you a better product. Not so with these major pet food companies that only care about the money and don't give a damn about safety. Hopefully the class action lawsuit will scare them into better quality control standards...but with the Bush Justice Dept. (that let tobacco companies slide by)...little chance of the pet food companies paying the piper for their incompetance.

It would be an act of war against all humanity and nations would respond with both diplomatic and military force.
