A fraction consists of two numbers written one over the top of the other.
Examples:
5/7 and 11/3
The bar line is equivalent mathematically to a division sign.
When the upper number (called the numerator) is less than the lower number (called the denominator), the fraction is a proper fraction.
When the numerator is greater than the denominator, the fraction is an improper fraction, because it can be reduced to an integer and a proper fraction.
11/3 is equivalent to the integer 3 plus the proper fraction 2/3.
Proper fractions have a value less than 1.

Fraction, a number, such as or , that is not a whole number but that is formed by dividing one quantity by another. The top number of a fraction is called the numerator, while the bottom number is called the denominator. Fractions represent portions of a whole. If you cut an apple into four equal pieces and then eat one piece, for example, the fraction describes the uneaten portion of the apple: You still have three out of a total of four pieces.

In mathematics, a fraction is a way of expressing a number of equal parts. A fraction consists of two numbers, a numerator which gives the number of equal parts and a denominator which gives the number of those parts that make up a whole. For example, the fraction 3⁄4 could be used to represent three equal parts of a cake, where the whole cake is divided into four equal parts.

Fractions are things that you have to spend hours and hours wrestling with at school, when you have finally got to grips with it, after being humiliated time and time again by your teacher in front of all your friends, it is time to leave school!
When you leave school and go out into the big wide world of work, you realise that computers and calculators work these things out for you, sometimes automatically and you never have to worry about fractions again!
But it does keep mathematic teachers off the streets! During the day at least!
At night they roam the streets in gangs, sucking the blood out of homeless people!
