have a williamson temp-o-matic oil burning furnace. recently ran it out of fuel oil and had to bleed the line, got the furnace going but now the fan runs constantly and shortly after the heating cycle stops it blows cold air into the house since it is in the basement. shut the power off to furnace in hopes of it resetting itself, didnt work my other option is to shut fan off completely.

It sounds like the thermostat fan switch is set to ON instead of AUTO. If not then hopefully you have a wiring diagram and can trace the point that is supposed to be open to kill the fan and then can determine the failure.

i had a unit do this to me a few years ago the problem was that a "rollout switch" or over temperature switch was kicking out the unit, which means it blows the fan to cool the unit for a minute and then the unit is supposed to reset. well the rollout switch would clear and the unit would just be stuck there. i'd wake up at 3 am freezing with a new baby and try and keep him warm and do just what you said. cycle power on the unit. what i did to fix it was replace the controller for the furnace. the HVAC guy wanted to re do all my duct work....yea right, that would work too but if the unit resets from minor overheating properly then its no problem. have them replace the controller.

On your fan/limit switch there may be a manual button that you may have tripped by pushing it in. Check to see if this is the case. You should see a white plastic button sticking out of it- pull it out and the fan is on auto- push it in and the fan will run 24- 7

there is a fan/limit switch above the oil burner usually to the left of the flue on the furnace...this is bad and needs replaced ...cost about 30 dollars easy to change..of course if you central air on this furnace could have thermostat set on fan on instead of auto or fan relay could be bad....but i would bet on the fan/limit switch being bad
