If Governments stay in power for too long a period of time,
at first a sort of complacency sets in, and if apparently
they feel they can't put a foot wrong complacency will give way to arrogance, specially when unopposed.
It has happenned in the UK where during Maggie Thatcher and following that John Major, the conservatives were so
convinced they could not possibly lose an election that the
shock of discovering they were wrong still shakes the Tories
today,they have not yet recovered.
In America the situation is even worse, apparently the checks
and balances allowing the people or their direct representatives to control and if necessary sanction their
administration have been nullified,
Basically Bush and Cheney have been able to do whatever
they thought was good for the USA.
Dick Cheney is even more of a hard line Republican as George Bush, and would be even more dedicated that the
Government sets the guidelines and has the moral justification to determine what and how the war on terror
should be fought.( and how the public should think )
He has done so now for 6 years, and now he's hit a snag
and basically he's entrenched himself, and has dug himself a
hole he can no longer climb out of.
At this political level, we are talking big inflated ego's
whether Republican or Democrat doesn't make a difference.
I think Cheney has gone into a state of denial, and keeps
telling himself they will deliver the next President.
And that they will win the war in Iraq, to admit to having misjudged or mishandled this situation is just not something
he's willing / or able to contemplate.

I am not sure what is up with him. I have noticed lately that he always seems very angry. I guess if I were in his shoes I would be angry as well.
