How can we, on a local level, make sure law and order are upheld in our neighbourhoods?

I live in the UK and our loca lNeighbourhood Watch scheme, whilst of good intention, is simply ineffectual.

Without turning to vigilantism what can we all do on a domestic level?

Make sure you report crime as it happens. You will only have an effectual police presence (if thats what you want) if every crime is reported to your area police, it is recorded and you get a crime number every time - then when the quotas are looked at, more police are allocated to areas where crime is highest. Is that what you want? On the other hand, join your Parish or Town Council as a Councillor and get to understand a bit more about the systems...

All members should keep journals for say one month.
All talk to members of the locality about what effects them most. You will find that some wont have any problem and others who have lots.
Work out which problems need prompt action. i.e police involvement. local school etc.
Then work your way down the lists.
If you all work together on each problem maybe you could come up with solutions.

Form a block watch? Report illegal activity to the local police and neighbors.
In our neighborhood, we have an association and report activity to one person and she will forward it to all of the other residents via email.

how dare you ! what cheek! the cops will arrest you so fast your feet wont touch the floor! the only thing the cops are for are collecting tax! god forbid they ever do what they should,

get rid of traffic wardens and bring in more community police.
