Trust me, you'll know. Contractions start out feeling like cramps, and they only last a few seconds at first, and they gradually get closer together and stronger and last 45-60 seconds. Trust me, it doesn't tickle and you will definately know.
With me, I had contractions all day, and then they had to break my water when I was 8cm dialated, I was already in the hospital and ready to go! I've heard that most often your water doesn't break until you are at the hospital. I remember worrying about knowing when I was in labour, but you know. :)

I have had four. My contractions felt nothing like cramps or period pains. It is a tightening of the uterus accompained by a dull ache. It is an achy, stretching feeling. It is similar to the pain you get if you hold your mouth open as wide as you can for several minutes. For most people, the water does not break first. Taking 200 IU of vitamin E a day will help keep your water from breaking too early.

Contractions don't always start first. Sometimes the water breaking gets them going good.
I know with my 5 children I felt most of the pain in my lower back. Felt like a really uncomfortable pressure back there. For others they feel it more in the front with the tightening of the muscles.
I know with my first it took me a few hours before I realized the back pain I was having were contractions. If you are feeling pain or discomfort and aren't sure, call your doctor.

Contractions feel like the worse pain ever. I had to sit down and do my breathing to make it through. You will know trust me. Some people have to have there water broke once they get to the hospital. That is what happened to me. The doc just breaks it bc your contractions are so close you need to have the baby.
good luck

CONTRACTIONS CAN START BEFORE YOUR WATERS BREAK (MOST DO) AT FIRST THEY FEEL LIKE PERIOD PAINS, THEN WHEN THEY START GETTING BAD THE PAIN IS IN YOUR BUM AND YOU FEEL LIKE YOU NEED TO GO TO THE LOO.
