The potential suitor would first got to the girl's father and ask his permission to court her. Upon recieving his permission, the suitor could commence his courtship. That consisted of daily visits to her home and outings in the park, possibly going riding, all of this of course chaperoned. There were also rules as to what sorts of presents it was permissible for the girl to recieve. Flowers, chocolates, possibly a book. No jewelry, gloves, or anything that could be worn. Most certainly no kissing, no sitting closely next to each other, no embracing.
