I thought they were kinda the same when I only had pets and no kid, then I had the baby and that really changed my perspective.
I'll pick baby because the rewards are greater, and the sense of accomplishment day in/out is really wonderful.
Try getting THAT from a cat/dog.

PETS anytime over babies or even kids for that matter pets are so much more loyal.

Either or there are extremists on both sides. I have 7 of one and 1 of the other. I tell the kids all of the time if I had the dog first there would be 7 dogs and 1 kid.
