if your windows will open from the top, that would cut down on the traffic dust a little. I know it's unlikely but if you have any windows NOT on the main street, open THOSE.Open your windows during the night not in the day when traffic is heavy. Febreeze is a nice air freshener that's not heavy. Sheer curtain panels will "trap" some of the dust from coming in but still let it venelate.

The only way to lessen the dust is to keep your windows closed, but since you like the fresh air, you'll just have to dust your apartment more often.

Check Consumer Reports before purchasing an air purifier because many popular name brands are worthless. We owned on that made allergies worse.
Purchase a vacuum cleaner with disposable bags like a Hoover Wind Tunnel. That brand works well at getting fine dust particles.

Check your Air Filters & type of heat your building uses. Change your filters every 3 months. If you don't have access to them. Buy small ones and place them inside your register vents. If you have a boiler or electric then it's not the heat. Put filters in your windows to keep dirt from coming in from outside. Buy good ones. Like the Purple Filtrete air filters to fit your window opening so no air can get around it. This will really help. They get dirty quickly but the good ones will last up to 3 months. If you buy the $0.99 ones expect to change them weekly.

don't open windows so wide, this is what is bringing in the dust so heavily, there is really no way to control the dust coming in from windows other than the above mentioned. Good Luck !

debris from the outside can get in with the windows open and the same with in the hall if doors are being opened frequently. An air purifier like the ones from the sharper image work since it's enviromentally friendly to use.

Well lots of debris is coming in when u open windows, gets some screens up and also some curtains to block most of the debris. Then try upgrading your vacuum. That is most peoples problem is their vacuum.

Crack the windows slightly. If you do not have screens, they may help, but on a main street you may have to close the windows
