Both of those methods work, but it could possibly damage the computer. Windows XP is an unstable operating system, thus it has to have time to organize itself and store information before shutdown. One thing that can work, is to go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Power Options.Click on the "Advanced Tab" and set the computer to "Shut Down" under the "When I press the power button on my computer:" headline. This will give you a safe way to shutdown the computer. Also, one thing that helps before shutdown is to save(where applicable) and close all applications. Also, CTRL-ALT-DEL and use the Windows Task Manager to see what programs are running. U may have some add-ware or spy-ware interfereing with ur shotdown process. Hope this helps.

Some computers need to have the power switch held down for a few seconds, as was already mentioned. This is a good design! Nothing worse than trying to eject a CD, and having the computer shut down in response (as has happened to me).

Also, people mentioned unplugging it. I agree. "When all else fails, use the three-pronged on-off switch." That's what I like to say...

Hold the power button on the tower for 10 seconds. It should turn off. It will most likely be just fine when you turn it back on. Windows does that sometimes.

hey according to me thats just the start of trouble. Please use any anti virus (if available) or try a common solution(i use it often because i am always experimenting), try creating a new user account, well it helps me but you would have to format soon.
So start taking backup.
Have a Good Day
PS also check for improper installations
