My mom says"dont wear black nailpolish,it will send across the wrong message' what does she mean??? I have been wearing it and I have NOT received strange looks from anybody.Though she never tells a word about my dark colored clothes. She has no problem with the color of my clothes. Why is she telling me that if I wear black nailpolish it will send across the wrong message??

Ooh,and I just LOVE the gothic look.I dont give a damn about who says what about my style.

I guess you answered your own question, M.C.R.

In today's society ppl who do not conform to the ritualistic way of living in dress or talk are deemed outcasts.

The Gothic look is definitely one of them.

But if it makes you happy dressing the way you do, then so be it. You're only 12- this is just a phase. You want to fit in with other 'tween's who dress completely in black and that's OK.

This too shall pass and you will eventually grow out of it...

That is what your mom is trying to have you avoid the Gothic look. Somewhere she has been exposed to it and for some reason it was not a positive experience so she is trying to get you to think otherwise when it comes to black. You do not give any indication as to your age, so your mother may be missing her opportunity here if you are already say well into highschool. If not then she is trying to steer you somehow, why not show your maturity and ask her why she said that to you? Remember you are her little baby, just a little bit older now how much we do not know until you let us know. At any rate she may feel she has an obligation to pass on to you her likes and dislikes for your own betterment. She told you to stay away from that hot oven door because she knew something about the danger. Wearing black nailpolish is not a danger to me but your mom may have a valid reason for saying this to you, talk to her, she is your mom. The fact that you don't give a damn about who says what about your style is already putting you into a situation that your mother already feels obligated to say something and maybe she knows that what she said will get you thinking it is time to talk as well. As a former teacher the school definitely had a say in what style was allowed and what was not. Perhaps your mother can teach you something about being responsible for that style as it too has consequences. Talk to women who have been raped about what style they thought had provoked some male into thinking that they dressed inappropriately and sent the wrong message about themselves. Two buttons not buttoned on a dress or a top can spell a style that could cause you trouble. Talk to mom before your style causes a problem for both you and her. Now after visiting your 360 if you are a guy then you have other things to consider as even wearing nail polish could be an indication that your mother may have other feelings about. Good luck.

Honey, if I were your grandpa, I'd tell your ma that the color of your nails is one of the last things she should worry about. What the heck, lots of girls your age like the goth look. As for the black - well, unfortunately there are those who think it signifies Devil worship. It isn't - or at least it almost always isn't - and your mom is concerned about how people who think it is Satanism might treat you. Once in a very great while, someone goes off the deep end on the topic of Satanism and reacts with extreme violence - but your personal chances of being struck by lightning are probably much greater. Still, it's a legitimate concern for a parent, so don't get all nasty with your mom. Be thankful she cares, and reassure her you'll be careful.
And c'mon - sure you care what people think of your style. That's the purpose of style - to say "This is who I am." You will probably move on and experiment with other styles as you grow older. That's okay, too: it's part of growing up. Just don't start experimenting with tobacco, drugs or booze. Those things have a dreadful habit of turning around and biting you in the butt REAL hard!

Because other people will not take you in as "cool", but rather as offensive if not out of your mind, unless they are really freaked or something. If I see someone trying to be "cool", it looks more like they need an asylum. I mean, it is just stupid, but you are entitled to your own opinion. What your mom means is that some people might think that you are some juvenile delinquent or just someone who is unstable. I would listen to your mom because she has had more experience in matters like that than you have. Remember, she was a teenager too and was one for longer than you have been one, so she would probably know a little more on the matter. I would ask her about what she meant if you are still confused. It is always best to talk to your parents about thing like this. They are around to help you. (Well, at least MOST of them are, if you ever hear horrid stories about parents and their children, but I am sure your mom is OK.) Here I go again: rambling on about physiology. You get me talking about it, (or typing) I can't stop until I have a good conclusion. My conclusion is: talk to your mom about it and ask her what she means about spreading the wrong message.

My Chem: A lot of parents think that black nail polish would only be worn by someone who is doing drugs, or some other negative activity. Your mom is just trying to look out for you. Why don't you work out a compromise? Wear the type of clothes and nails she wants to church and grandma's house and wear what you like(within the guidelines) to school? If you talk openly with your mom about things she will respect your views more and understand more where you are coming from. I know that I thought black nail polish was weird until I saw so many young people wearing it - its just the style now. Get out your mom's high school yearbook and take a look at the way she and her friends wore their hair or the clothes they thought were cool - I think your mom would get a kick out of showing you pictures of herself at your age. Then she would be forced to remember how important it is to rebel a little. -k-

The Gothic look is the style right now, and even if you are not goth black nail polish is still cute and fun. Your mother is out of the loop. Go for your dreams. Embrace the black.

Since you are only 12 years old you better GIVE A DAMN and soon. Where do you get off being the boss over your Mother? You show no respect to her at all. You are just a little girl...and don't ask us what your Mother meant...be a big girl and go ask her yourself since you are so mature and ready to boss yourself!

You shouldn't even be on here with the adult conversations that happen here...does your Mommy know that you are on here? Does she know what yahoo is all about?????

Give yourself some grow up time....what is all the rush?

You could try other gothic colours like dark shades of purple or blue as a compromise. I'm a guy who likes dark nail polish, recently I've been trying on L'Oreal No. 200. It's a really dark purple that looks almost black. If you do wear a really dark purple and your mum complains just show her the bottle and tell her it's purple not black.

Moms seem to get antsy when their kid wears black nail polish and dark clothes. They have a hard time with their little baby turning out to be a weirdo.. Either ignore it and move on with life or quit wearing black nail polish and end the drama.

i went through the same exact thing...she'll get over it eventually, my mom did, and now it's kind of a joke between us. i'm 21 and STILL wear black nail polish, but i guess that's kinda becoming fashionable?
i think it's awesome you wanna look different than everyone else, and if you don't walk around saying "i hate the world", then your mom won't have any reason to worry about you
