I've been with my company for over 7 years and hold a senior support role and well positioned with my current employer and compensated extremely well.We have 4k employees. My overall comp is based on an 80-20 plan. Meaning 80% base and 20% comm however there is not a lot of upward mobility.Recently I was approached by the leader in my industry and has over 100k employees for a sales position. They want me to work for them. The comp is based on a 60-40 plan. 60%base and 40%comm.This company has a lot of opp to move up.I am waiting for an offer.

My question is: if my base is 100k,how much % should I give up on my base that is acceptable (from support to sales) and should I consider the move?

For argument's sake, let's say you're 30.

In five years, you'll be 35. You will be 35 if you make the move, you'll be 35 if you don't make the move. What will you say in 5years, I'm glad I did, or I wish I had.

Any move is a crapshoot. Don't concentrate too much on a "one shot" gain in pay, concentrate on where you want to be in 5 years.

#1 compare your current commission. Don't expect the commisions to be that much different. Try to get a 20-25% bump in the total for making the move.

From my perspective, money isn't everything. I've been with my company for five years, and I also receive commissions. I would never leave it for more money because I work with and for great people. I like and respect them, and they feel the same way towards me. Money can't replace happiness. Please remember this when you're making your decision. Good luck.

i would go with your heart. if it is something you are really interested in, do it. it sounds like a good offer, but is it really what you want? do you want to stay in the position you are in? or so you want to work up higher in your career?
